Srinagar, January 21 (KNO) : In yet another spell of rain and snowfall across the Valley, the normal life in Kashmir was disrupted on Monday as the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only road connecting valley with rest of the States was closed for the vehicular movement. The Kashmir parts in this morning received a fresh snowfall while as the overnight rains lashed the plains here, leaving City areas inundated. The inundation caused by the intermittent rains left the pedestrians to suffer. The officials in MeT department told KNO that that some of the parts of Kashmir received moderate snowfall today. They also informed that the temperature across Kashmir has gone down by some degrees. Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu highway was also closed following fresh snowfall in the Banihal area, officials said. “No vehicle was allowed to ply on the either sides of the highway during the day as a precautionary measure. The situation will be reviewed after the weather improves,” he said. The officials further said that the intending travellers have been advised not to undertake journey without finding out the latest status of the road from traffic help lines in Jammu and Srinagar. Reports said that some of the airlines had also suspended flight operations today in view of the poor visibility and prevailing weather conditions. Meanwhile, fresh snowfall has also affected traffic on various roads of Rajouri and Poonch districts. Locals told KNO that traffic on various roads of Poonch district including Chandimarh, Bufliyaz, Loran, Saujiyan roads and in Rajouri district on DKG, Budhal, Kandi road is partially affected due to snowfall and severe slippery conditions of the road. Besides, traffic on Bufliyaz to Thanamandi via DKG road is fully closed. “Power supply is also affected in some areas due to snowfall and rainfall with level of snow in higher reaches of Poonch and Rajouri reaching over one and a half feet,” the locals said. Pertinently, the MeT had forecast moderate to heavy snowfall in the Kashmir Valley and rain in the Jammu division during the next 24 hours till Tuesday. “Widespread moderate to rather heavy rain and snowfall is likely to occur during the next 24 hours (till Tuesday),” Met officials told KNO, adding that a western disturbance is active over the state and its intensity will decrease from Wednesday onwards.(KNO)
